James G. Thomas Jr. is associate director for publications at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. Since 2003, he has been managing editor of the recently completed 24-volume New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture. He and Charles Reagan Wilson edited the Science & Medicine volume (22) of the series. Thomas has worked as an editor on publications in New York and Oxford, Miss., where he lives with his wife and daughter.
