You will receive your volunteer assignment during training and meet your immediate leader. For your convenience we will schedule three sessions at three different times. You only need to attend one session.
All volunteers will wear a specially designed t-shirt that makes it possible to easily identify volunteers. You will receive your t-shirt when you arrive to volunteer. Please wear a top that allows for a t-shirt over it or plan to change. (Please note, a t-shirt cannot be gauranteed to anyone signing up to volunteer after October 6.)
Please wear comfortable slacks/jeans, long shorts, or a skirt in a solid color. You might want to layer your clothing, as we’re never sure if we will need to shed or add sweaters or shirts! Your best bet is to bring something you can wear or tie around your waist or shoulders.
Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to stand a lot.
Don’t forget a sun visor or hat and sunscreen or rain gear - weather dictating.
Unfortunately, the space in the Volunteer Tent is not secure. Therefore, we will not store items such as purses, briefcases or purchases while you work. A fanny pack might be a good option. Leave your valuables at home - travel light!
There are a number of parking garages and parking lots available to Festival attendees. Most are within easy walking distance to the Festival area. You will receive a map for specific locations during training.
All volunteers should check in at the Volunteer Tent at the time assigned, not before. Shifts have been designed to allow for check-in and travel to your assignment, so you don’t need to arrive early. You will receive your assignment, directions to your volunteer location, a nametag and your Louisiana Book Festival T-shirt. (Should you arrive early, feel free to walk the grounds of the festival to familiarize yourself with the layout).
Volunteers are to return to the Volunteer check-in site when they have finished their assignment and turn in their volunteer evaluation.
First, please make every effort to find a replacement. Share the information in this handbook with your replacement and contact the Volunteer Coordinator with your replacement’s name and contact information. Call any of the staff if you are unable to find a replacement.
