Ben Sandmel is a New Orleans-based journalist, folklorist, drummer, and producer. He is the author of Zydeco,!  a collaborative book with photographer Rick Olivier. His forthcoming book Ernie K-Doe, The R&B Emperor of New Orleans, will be published in 2012 by the Historic New Orleans Collection. Sandmel produces the oral history/interview sessions at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. He has produced and played on four albums including the Grammy-nominated Deep Water by the Cajun/western swing band The Hackberry Ramblers. Sandmel currently is enrolled in the Masters Program in Musicology at Tulane University.
