After a nine-year residence in France, during which time he earned his doctorate in linguistics at the University of Paris (la Sorbonne), Michael D. Picone became a professor of French and Linguistics at the University of Alabama in 1988. His areas of teaching and research are multiple: French and Romance Linguistics, French neology (he is author of
Anglicisms, Neologisms and Dynamic French), contact between languages, Francophone Louisiana, the linguistic history of Alabama and linguistic and semiotic approaches to aspects of popular culture.
